A New Telescope Will Photograph a Billion Galaxies
NASA is getting ready to launch its Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on 30 August, riding a giant SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. Its mirror is the same size as the famous Hubble telescope's, but it can photograph a patch of sky about 100 times wider in one go. Over its life it may measure the light of a billion galaxies, hunt for hidden planets around other stars, and help solve one of the biggest mysteries in science: a strange push called "dark energy" that is making the whole universe spread out faster and faster.
One picture from Roman will hold what would take Hubble a hundred pictures to capture.

India's First Space Traveller Will Be a Robot
Before Indian astronauts fly, ISRO plans to send up a test mission with no humans on board — but not empty. Riding inside will be Vyommitra, a half-humanoid robot built to sit in the astronaut's seat and check that the air, temperature and controls all keep a human safe. This first uncrewed Gaganyaan test flight is expected later in 2026, launched by India's powerful LVM3 rocket. Four Indian Air Force pilots are already training to fly on a later mission.
A robot goes first so that when people follow, every switch has already been tested.

A Dead Rocket Just Made a Fresh Crater on the Moon
On 5 August, a leftover piece of a SpaceX rocket — drifting through space for months after an old mission — crashed into the far side of the Moon near a spot called Einstein Crater. It hit at about 8,700 km/h and scientists expect it carved a brand-new crater roughly 18 metres across. Nobody meant for it to happen, and it has started an important conversation about all the "space junk" humans are leaving behind out there.
The Moon has no wind or rain, so a scar made today can stay for millions of years.

Nepal's Wild Tigers Have More Than Tripled
Our neighbour Nepal has seen its wild tiger population more than triple — one of the strongest tiger comebacks anywhere in the world. It took years of forest patrols to stop poaching, protected areas for the big cats to roam, and, above all, helping the people who live near tigers to stay safe. India's tiger numbers are climbing too. Because tigers need huge, healthy forests, protecting them also protects thousands of other animals and plants.
When tigers thrive, it's a sign the whole forest around them is healthy.

At the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, India finished with 39 medals — 13 gold, 17 silver and 9 bronze — and came fourth overall. There were plenty of firsts: Asmita Dey won India's first-ever Commonwealth Games gold in judo, and weightlifter Mirabai Chanu claimed her third Commonwealth gold in a row. Indian boxers were the stars, winning ten medals, more than any other country in the sport.

NASA's Curiosity rover has photographed a strange patch of Mars nicknamed a "sea of polygons" — ground cracked into neat honeycomb shapes, a bit like the crazy-paving you see when a muddy puddle dries in the sun. On Earth, cracks like these form when wet ground dries out and shrinks, over and over. Finding them on Mars is another clue that this dusty red desert was once a much wetter place.
Even cracks in the ground can be a message from a planet's watery past.
