Why Countries Team Up to Save Wild Animals

Some animals — like the snow leopard — live across the mountains of many countries at once: India, Nepal, China, Pakistan and more. No single country can protect them alone, so nations sign agreements to share information, stop poaching, and guard the same animals together. It's a lovely example of how the world can cooperate: wildlife doesn't carry a passport, so people have to work across borders to keep it safe.

Why Is It Colder at the Top of a Mountain?

You'd think the mountain top, being closer to the Sun, would be warmer — but it's freezing! Here's the secret: the Sun heats the ground, and the ground warms the air just above it. High up, the air is thin and spread out, so it holds far less of that heat and lets it escape. That's why Ladakh's peaks stay snowy even in summer — and why mountaineers pack thick coats.

The air itself doesn't make heat — it borrows it from the ground below.

The Snow Leopard — Ghost of the Mountains

The snow leopard is one of the shyest, most magical big cats on Earth. Its thick, pale, spotted fur is perfect camouflage against snowy rock, so it slips by almost unseen — which is why people call it the "ghost of the mountains." Its enormous furry tail works like a scarf to keep it warm and helps it balance on cliffs. Very few remain in the wild, so India's new Ladakh safari hopes to help protect them.

An animal this rare and beautiful is a treasure worth every effort to protect.
