The Midnight When India Woke Up Free

This weekend India celebrated its 80th year of freedom — and it all began at midnight on 15 August 1947. As the clock struck twelve, India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, gave a famous speech called "Tryst with Destiny," saying India was awakening "to life and freedom." After nearly 200 years of British rule, the country was finally its own.

Every freedom we enjoy today began at that one midnight moment.
