Onam: India's Festival of Flowers, Feasts and Boats

In Kerala, Onam is the biggest celebration of the year — a harvest festival that thanks the land for its food. Families lay out huge circular patterns made entirely of fresh flower petals, called pookalam, on their doorsteps. Everyone shares a grand feast, the sadya, served on a banana leaf with dozens of little dishes. And on the rivers, long, sleek snake-boats race with a hundred rowers paddling as one, drums pounding. It's colour, food and teamwork all at once.

Festivals are how a whole community says thank you — and has fun together.

A Giant Telescope Spots Baby Galaxies Full of Tiny Stars

The James Webb Space Telescope — the most powerful ever built — has peered back in time to when the universe was very young, and found something surprising: those early "baby" galaxies were packed with far more small, faint stars than scientists expected. Because light takes billions of years to reach us, looking far away is like looking back in time — so the telescope is really showing us what the universe looked like long, long ago.

Every time we build a better telescope, the universe surprises us all over again.

Why Does the Monsoon Bring So Much Rain?

Every summer, the land in India heats up faster than the sea around it. Hot air over the land rises, and cool, damp air rushes in from the ocean to fill the gap — carrying loads of water. When those wet winds hit the coast and the mountains, the water cools, forms clouds, and falls as the monsoon rains. It's the same reason a kettle steams: warm, wet air cools down and the water comes back out.

One giant swap of hot and cool air feeds almost a whole country for the year.

How Do You Count Tigers You Can't See?

India is home to most of the world's wild tigers — but they're shy and roam deep in the forest, so how do rangers count them? They set up thousands of hidden "camera traps" that snap a photo whenever an animal walks past. Here's the clever bit: every tiger's stripes are unique, like a fingerprint. Now AI software scans the millions of photos and tells each tiger apart, helping India know exactly how many it has to protect.

You can't protect what you can't count — and smart cameras are counting.
